The gap in care

When weekly therapy isn't enough — and the hospital isn't the answer.

There's a gap in mental health care that a lot of people fall into. You're working with a therapist, but the hour each week isn't keeping up with what you're carrying. Things feel heavier than they should. You're losing sleep, missing work, withdrawing from people you love — but you're not in crisis, and you don't need to be hospitalized.

This is where structured outpatient care belongs. PHP and IOP give you several hours of clinical support per day or per week, with a real treatment plan, a real team, and a clear path forward — without leaving home, work, or your family behind.

FAQ

Common questions about PHP, IOP, and structured outpatient care

A mental health Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a structured, daytime outpatient treatment program for adults whose symptoms require significant clinical support but not an overnight hospital stay. PHP typically runs about 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, with group therapy, individual therapy, psychiatric care, and family involvement integrated into a single treatment plan.

A mental health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured outpatient treatment program for adults whose symptoms need more than weekly therapy but who can safely live at home and continue working or attending school. IOP typically runs 3 hours per session, 3–5 days per week, combining group therapy, individual sessions, and psychiatric support when needed.

PHP is more intensive than IOP. PHP runs about 30 hours per week across 5 full days, while IOP runs 9–15 hours per week across 3–5 shorter sessions. PHP is typically used for stabilization or step-down from inpatient care. IOP is typically used for step-down from PHP, or for adults who need more than weekly therapy but can continue working or attending school.

Weekly therapy may not be enough if symptoms are interfering with sleep, work, school, or relationships, if you've plateaued in outpatient therapy, if you've recently been hospitalized, or if a clinician has recommended a higher level of care. A confidential assessment with a licensed clinician at Mendwell is the most reliable way to answer this question.

Many commercial insurance plans, including most PPO plans, provide coverage for medically necessary mental health PHP and IOP services. Actual coverage depends on your specific plan, deductible, copay or coinsurance, medical necessity, and whether the program is in or out of network. Mendwell's admissions team can help verify your benefits before you start care.
